Aladdin is a 1992 musical based on Disney’s animation by the same name with lyrics by Chad Beguelin, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice. It was written by Beguelin and music done by Alan Menken. The musical includes four new songs written by Beguelin and three written by Ashman for the film but not used in it. The plot is based on a story of a young man from a humble background, who uses the wishes to marry the princess he is in love with, from a genie he discovers in a lamp, and spoil the evil Grand Vizier of the Sultan. Aladdin premiered in 2011 at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. In 2013, it was given a Toronto tryout. This was after various local and global productions that took place in 2012. The musical received many positive reviews after it opened on March 20, 2014, on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater and was nominated for five Tony Awards. The role in the stage adaptation was played by Jonathan Freeman, while Courtney Reed and Adam Jacobs played Jasmine and Aladdin respectively. Clifton Davis as the Sultan; James Monroe Iglehart as Genie; and Don Darryl Rivera as Lago, were also part of the cast. Brandon O’Neill, Brain Gonzales, and Andrew Keenan-Bolger were additional cast who were conceived originally by the film’s creators but not used and were to play as Babkak, Kassim, and Omar respectively. Casey Nicholaw choreographed and directed the show. From June-October 2012, productions of the musical played in Utah, at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre, and in July 2012 in St.Louis at The Muny. It won one of the five Tony Awards’ nominations for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical. The cast album was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Best Musical Theater Album.
